Cove Ridge

Woolacombe

Cove Ridge, is an innovative seaside home in North Devon, built on the site of an old 1950s cottage. The home blends modern architecture with local traditions of whitewashed walls and slate roofs. Integrated into the cliffside, it offers privacy while maintaining impressive sea views through ample windows and skylights. The unique design positions the main living areas on the upper level and private spaces on the ground floor, creating a passive energy control system. The house showcases an array of materials, white render, ash joinery, and slate grey polished concrete, to reflect the local geology and imbue the house with depth and texture.

Light / Reflections

Cove Cottage, exposed to coastal weather and endowed with splendid views, skillfully explores the layers of walls and roofs to establish a harmony with its setting. The clever use of materials that either reflect or absorb light produces a visually stimulating environment, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors. This interplay with light not only enhances the interior ambiance but also creates captivating echoes of the sky and horizon throughout the home.

Craft / Rough Cast Black Render and Slate

The ground level of Cove Cottage features traditional white-render walls, adorned with varied textured finishes that blend harmoniously with the coastal surroundings. Above, a solid, intricately carved roof rests, externally sheathed in slate. Internally, the roof is treated with rough cast render, painted in the deepest black, creating a striking contrast with the white 'ruin' concept of the lower structure.
