Modern Mews

Paddington

The Modern Mews is a four-storey mews house that has been meticulously reimagined and crafted to maximize its use of space, light, and connectivity. The initial house suffered from limited natural light and disconnection between floors due to its original layout. To tackle this, Coffey Residential shifted the stairs to the center of the property, turning it into a central design feature that links all the floors while allowing light to permeate the home. Translucent sliding doors further enhance natural light penetration while preserving privacy.

To make better use of space, the living area and the master bedroom were swapped, improving the functionality of the home. A ground floor glass panel has been introduced to the front of the house, allowing natural light to reach the lower ground living room. This cohesive architectural solution provides an open and inviting feel throughout the property, resulting in a home that is a testament to intricate design, joinery craftsmanship, and thoughtful spatial planning.

Light / Borrowed and Translucent

The design uses glass flooring in the front and center areas, allowing sunlight to brighten the lower levels and facilitating a visual flow between stories. Blinds, integrated into the design, provide varying privacy levels as needed. On the upper floors, the sliding doors, constructed from a blend of translucent rice-paper glass and oak louvres, offer additional privacy while still permitting light to filter in. The strategic placement of a central stair and these unique sliding doors promotes light diffusion throughout the house, tying together all levels with unifying visibility.

Craft / Meticulous Joinery

The Modern Mews is an elegant testament to bespoke craftsmanship. The heart of this design is the oak joinery, seamlessly integrated within the house, giving it a feeling of a carved wooden masterpiece. The ground floor kitchen and dining area feature full height, oak-framed bi-folding doors, directly connecting the home to the mews.

Further enhancing the house's refined aesthetic are the bathrooms, sporting a seamless Corian finish on the walls and floors, a design choice made for its clean, streamlined appeal and low maintenance requirements. On the lower ground, the polished concrete floor unifies with the fireplace, creating a distinct contrast to the light oak stair above. This blend of heavy and light, texture and smoothness, embodies the thoughtful detailing and skillful execution that makes this house so unique.
