Well House

Highbury

Well House is a fully refurbished Edwardian terraced property, complete with side and rear extensions. The design sensitively incorporates bespoke built-in joinery and luxurious fittings while preserving and restoring original features.

The remodel includes a complete reconfiguration of the ground floor, a full-width, single-storey extension at the lower ground level with a structural glazed box, a newly lowered basement level featuring a double height light well, and a new attic bathroom.

This updated layout creates a fluid connection to the garden from the dining area, inviting natural light inside and offering views of the garden. The new ground and basement configuration introduces a dynamic interplay of levels between the ground, lower ground, and basement. These spaces are all interconnected by a central double-height void, flanked by staircases on either side, providing an engaging spatial experience.

Light / The Light ‘Well’

In the heart of Well House, a light 'well' strategically illuminates the children's playroom. This design choice transforms what could have been a dark room into a vibrant, light-filled space that offers views and brightness. The playroom seamlessly extends into the ground floor, augmenting the overall living space.

The incorporation of ultra-thin framed sliding doors and a frameless glass box towards the garden blurs the distinction between the home's interior and exterior. This integration allows the inside spaces to benefit from the captivating shadow patterns created by the mature trees surrounding the property, further enhancing the home's connection to its natural environment.

Craft / Concrete Worktops

Well House showcases the versatile application of concrete, as both floors and worktops throughout the property are constructed from this material. The use of concrete adds an earthy, grounded feel to the home. Two categories of materials exist - those that improve with age and those that don't. Concrete, especially when cast on-site, smoothed, and polished, belongs to the former category. It has the ability to exude warmth and develop a beautiful patina over time, enhancing the home's aesthetic appeal.
